Adding additional hard disk space to your desktop or laptop used to require a little bit of technical knowledge since you had to open the computer case, unscrew the hard drive from the bay remove the cables and power connectors before you could replace the existing drive. To add an additional drive you had to add another cable screw the second drive into an open place in the bay. No wonder most people didn’t even try to do it themselves.

All that is history … old school … today all you need to do is buy a USB external hard disk, plug it in, install drivers if necessary and you are ready to go.  I use one to keep all of the files that I use at work so I have them no matter where I am.

USB hard drives comes in sizes from 100GB to over 750 GB. One of the better rated USB hard drives is the Seagate Goflex This is an ultra slim had disk with the following specifications:

  • 7200 RPM
  • USB 3.0
  • USB 2.0 compatible
  • Height:  124mm (4.91 in)
  • Width: 78mm (3.07)
  • Length: 9mm (.354)
  • Weight: approximately 160g (.356lb)

It comes with its own USB cable and all you need to do is plug it into your computer and start using it. The drive comes formatted with the NTFS file system and a driver that can be used with a Macintosh.  There is also a suite of utilities to maintain your data.
