It seems that for the moment Seagate is winning the battle of the USB removable hard drives with the availability of their new Free Agent GoFlex 1.5 TB … yes folks … that’s TERABYTES!

This little baby is shipping with a USB 3.0 interface cable that lets you download data ten times faster than USB2.0. It is estimated to provide up to 5 Gbps peak speeds. For those of you who haven’t upgraded your USB port and whose motherboard manufacturers haven’t developed drivers that allow USB 2,0 ports work at higher speeds, it will also ship with a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 cable that can connect the drive to your, now old school 2.0 ports.

Other goodies included with the new drive are NTFS drivers for use with the MACs so no reformatting of files is necessary to transfer them between virtual operating systems located on the same machine. They have also included pre-loaded backup software with encryption.

Even better the new drive is fully compatible with GoFlex Net and the GoFlex TV HD media players. Like all GoFlex drives,  it can switch to FireWire800 or other high speed formats.

According to Darcy Clarkson, vice president of Global Retail Sales and Marketing for Seagate, “The new drive is a ‘triple-crown’ of consumer technology—packaging record breaking capacity, blazingly fast USB 3.0 connectivity and the bonus of movie entertainment—making the 1.5TB GoFlex ultra-portable drive an unprecedented and innovative solution.”
